Helsinki Airport, managed and developed by Finavia, has been honoured with the prestigious title of Best European Airport of 2023 in its size category by the Airports Council International (ACI).

This recognition highlights the airport's excellence in various areas of operation and underscores its commitment to sustainability, innovation, operational efficiency, and resilience.

Kimmo Mäki, CEO of Finavia, expressed gratitude for the award and pride in the international recognition of Helsinki Airport's success and Finnish expertise. Mäki acknowledged the dedication of Finavia employees, airport operating companies, and their employees in ensuring smooth travel experiences and contributing to the airport's future.

ACI highlighted Helsinki Airport's sustainability achievements and commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2025 as significant factors in winning the award. The airport's consolidation of two terminals into a single facility was also recognized as a remarkable accomplishment that improved resilience and operational efficiency.

The ACI awards are divided into five groups based on passenger traffic, and Helsinki Airport emerged victorious in its respective category. Other winners include Madeira Airport and Menorca Airport jointly (under 5 million passengers), Milano Linate Airport (5–10 million passengers), Athens International Airport (25–40 million passengers), and Rome Fiumicino Airport (over 40 million passengers).

An expert panel of judges from various aviation entities selected the winners and highly commended airports, evaluating factors such as passenger satisfaction, airport service quality, and industry contributions.

Earlier this year, Helsinki Airport also received the ASQ (Airport Service Quality) award as Europe's best airport in its size category. This recognition, based on passenger interviews and assessments, further solidified the airport's commitment to exceptional service quality and passenger satisfaction.

2023 holds significant importance for Helsinki Airport, as Finavia's billion-euro investment program, initiated a decade ago, nears completion in early autumn. The program has resulted in gradual expansion, service enhancements, and process reforms, ultimately transforming Helsinki Airport into an impressive architectural masterpiece, featuring Finnish design and state-of-the-art services.

Throughout the development program, Finavia remained steadfast in its commitment to reducing carbon emissions and prioritizing environmental considerations in the terminal extension project. The extensions have received international recognition through the BREEAM certificate, underscoring the airport's comprehensive sustainability efforts.

As Helsinki Airport continues to thrive, it sets a benchmark for the European aviation industry, demonstrating the successful convergence of excellence, innovation, and sustainability.
