Hämeenlinna – “the castle of Häme”

26/10/2021

Hämeenlinna, literally “the castle of Häme”, has developed around the 13th century castle that gave its’ name to the entire city. The city located by the picturesque Lake Vanajavesi is only an hour’s drive from the capital Helsinki and is now becoming one of the hotspots for food enthusiasts. Two high-quality restaurants were established in Hämeenlinna over the summer, and at least one more is due to open by the end of the year.

The most recent opening, Ravinteli Vintti in the atmospheric factory environment of Verkatehdas combines the best Nordic ingredients with Japanese cuisine. The restaurant promises fine dining without stiffness.

The other newcomer, Miller's BBQ, became a phenomenon amongst food enthusiasts on social media immediately after its opening. Unique in the Nordic countries, the meals are cooked in a smoker for 24 hours before getting onto the customer's plate. Not enough with delicious food but the 100-year-old atmospheric brick building and the terrace with rapid views will make the rest to convince that this place is a must-visit.

Hämeenlinna's restaurant scene will be further enriched in late 2021 when Vanai Bistro & Bastu opens in an old functionalist warehouse of the Finnish army next to the railway station. The urban meeting place will feature a bistro, bar, terrace and – as this is Finland – a sauna.
