Visit Finland´s border survey, "Matkailijamittari" in Finnish, is a monthly statistic co-created with Statistics Finland. Our border survey provides valuable information on tourism and revenue flows in Finland. The survey measures the number of visitors, spending, carbon footprint and segments of foreign visitors to Finland, as well as their travel behaviour, motivations, and satisfaction. Additionally, you can view data cumulatively to gain a better understanding of the tourism industry's development over time.

On this page, you may find the dashboards, open data sources of the border survey, and background information on the methodology and partners. Whether you are a policymaker, a researcher, a marketer, or a tourism professional, the border survey can help you make better decisions based on reliable, transparent and near real-time information.

The methods and sample of the survey

The data is obtained by interviewing travellers in person at the point of leaving Finland, such as airports and ports. The target population is the subset of travellers who are permanent residents of foreign countries. The sampling aims to form a representative and random sample of the population, according to the traveller's country of residence, purpose of the trip and time of travel. The annual target is around 8 000 to 10 000 interviews.

From analysis to impact: the collaboration and publication of the survey results

The survey is a collaboration between Visit Finland, Statistics Finland, and two private companies responsible for the fieldwork, Norstat Finland Oy and TAK Oy. Border survey is funded by the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF).

Statistics Finland processes the data for analysis and publishes the data as database tables and open data. The results of the survey are published monthly in Visit Finland’s statistical database Rudolf and in the Open Data service avoindata.fi.
